Openly gay Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has announced his resignation in the wake of a new sexual-abuse allegation against himthis time, from a family member, The Seattle Times reported.
The resignation occurred shortly after a younger cousin was publicly accusing Murray, 62, of molesting him in New York in the 1970s. It was the fifth such allegation against Murray.
Murray, a former Democratic state legislator elected mayor in 2013, issued a statement denying the charge, but also listing his accomplishments, such as gay-rights laws and a $15/hour minimum wage. "While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business," the mayor said.
Council President Bruce Harrell will temporarily serve as mayor. He will decide whether to take on the role of acting mayor past the Nov. 7 election.
