NEW YORK ( September 29, 2015 ) — GLSEN's Executive Director, Dr. Eliza Byard, issued the following statement in recognition of today's Pink Out Day, launched by Planned Parenthood Federation of America in response to recent efforts to discredit and defund the organization. Pink Out Day calls on those who support women's health to stand with Planned Parenthood via social media, by wearing pink and attending rallies.
"Today and every day, we stand as an ally to Planned Parenthood, an essential partner in ensuring the healthy development of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ( LGBT ) youth across the country. Planned Parenthood teaches comprehensive, LGBT-inclusive sex education that is otherwise unavailable in schools and offers much-needed LGBT-inclusive health care services. The organization has also helped create a network of committed and trained educators to share practices for supporting LGBT youth in schools. We join Planned Parenthood in its fight to keep its funding intact and encourage others to do the same."

The largest provider of reproductive health care services in the nation, Planned Parenthood, has endured relentless attacks in recent months. We stand beside Planned Parenthood today as an ally that provides vital health services to low-income people of all genders.
Not everyone believes in the importance of the work Planned Parenthood provides to hundreds of thousands of people each year. On Friday, the U.S. House Energy and Commerce committee proposed Reconciliation Instructions that called for defunding Planned Parenthood, endangering services that include breast and cervical cancer screenings, access to contraception and family planning, and HIV tests.
Stand with us and speak out against the defunding of these programs, which are vital to public health.

First:
Urge Illinois members of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce committee to vote AGAINST the Reconciliation Instructions and end the threat of cuts to Planned Parenthood.

As your constituent, I urge you to vote AGAINST the Reconciliation Instructions announced last Friday that would cut funding to Planned Parenthood. Its programs add to a strong public health system that ensures all individuals have access to the reproductive health care and preventive services they need.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Reconciliation Instructions contain measures to defund Planned Parenthood, and this is unacceptable. I urge you to vote against these proposed cuts and remove the controversial policy riders. We need to address the reproductive health and public health challenges our nation faces by supporting health care providers. Otherwise, we will lose the health improvements we've made over the years and instead bear higher health, economic and social costs in the long run.
