This Friday April 13 update has been added to the April 11 online issue of Windy City Times.
Don Imus has been silenced, at least on the airwaves.
A little more than a week after referring to members of the Rutgers
University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" and a day after MSNBC dropped its simulcast of Imus' show, Imus in the Morning, CBS announced on April 12 that it was ending the shock jock?s show, effective immediately. The development was a stunning turnaround for one of the most successful radio personalities in history.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Imus? termination occurred after a meeting Thursday at CBS headquarters in New York. Various civil rights activists, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, asked Les Moonves, CBS? president, to take action against statements the advocates found indefensible. Jackson called Imus? firing ?a victory for public decency, according to NorthJersey.com .
After being fired, Imus met with members of the team at New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine?s mansion. Team coach C. Vivian Stringer called the meeting "productive," according to the Associated Press. ( Corzine never made it after being injured in an auto accident en route to the mansion. He currently is suffering from various injuries, and it may be months before he can walk again, The Post Chronicle reported. )
On April 13, Imus? wife, Deirdre, finished his two-day radio fundraiser. The event had been scheduled some time ago.
