Foundation board members to become homeless to raise awareness and funds

CHICAGO ( January 5, 2016 ) Explaining that many Americans are just two missed pay checks away from becoming homeless, members of the Board of the 530 Fullerton Foundation are planning to leave their own homes on the night of January 22. The night of homelessness — scheduled on a date when the average Chicago temperature is a snowy 16 degrees — is intended to raise awareness of the issues facing the 140,000 people who are homeless in Chicago and funds to help finance the programs offered through the Foundation that are meant to help address such issues, which include programs to serve hot meals, deliver warm clothing, provide basic healthcare and much needed toiletries.
"Obviously, one night outdoors will not give us a true sense of what it is like to live on the streets," said JD Miller, President of the Foundation's Board of Directors. "Yet, we are going to engage with the same issues anyone else would who suddenly found themselves homeless. Where is there a warm place to sleep? What will we eat? How will we manage basic human needs like going to the bathroom, or washing up? The night will allow us to observe, reflect, and raise awareness for the problems our guests face."
