Inspire Recoverylocated in West Palm Beach, Floridais one of only three addiction-treatment centers in the nation focused on LGBTQ people in the recovery community, according to Admissions Coordinator George Lydon, via a press release.
The center says that prejudice, discrimination, and trauma relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, indicates that members of the LGBTQ community can be more likely to develop substance abuse problems, adding that difficult experiences and traumas having to do with being LGBTQ in a heteronormative society can factor into root causes that perpetuate addiction.
Furthermore, like anything else in our heteronormative society, the environment at addiction-treatment centers usually follows suit, Inspire says.
The clinical team uses evidenced-based therapies such as dialectical behavioral therapy ( DBT ), cognitive behavioral therapy ( CBT ) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing ( EMDR ). It combines 12-step recovery with responsive coaching and apply a strong emphasis on practical wellness that includes an on-site nutritionist, tai chi, meditation and art therapy. Inspire Recovery provides partial hospitalization program ( PHP ), intensive outpatient ( IOP ) and outpatient ( OP ) levels of care. Clients are transported to off-site 12 step meetings, at the local LGBTQ meeting clubhouse.
With November being Transgender Awareness Month, Inspire is making sure the trans community knows about its treatment of that demographic, including appropriate housing and the usage of correct pronouns. Inspire says it is willing to offer training to to other facilities, so that they may better serve the LGBTQ community.
