All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records: showing Jan. 24 and 26 at the Gene Siskel Film Center ( as part of "Stranger Than Fiction: Documentary Premieres" ), this Colin Hanks-directed film takes a look at the titular company, which earned an astonishing billion dollars annually in its prime. "All Things" features founder Russ Solomon but also examines the changes in an ever-evolving music industry.
Million Dollar American Princesses: The second season of the Smithsonian Channel series again features actress Elizabeth McGovern ( Downton Abbey ) as narrator. She discusses everyone from Nancy Astor to Rita Hayworth to lesbian Winnaretta Singer ( daughter of sewing-machine magnate Isaac Singer ) as she takes viewers on a global excursion.
Billions: The Showtime series ( which stars airing Jan. 17 ) begins with a dominatrix using powerful attorney Chuck Rhoades ( played by Paul Giamatti ) as a human ashtray ( and toilet )and it only gets better from there. Rhoades relentlessly pursues hedge-fund king Bobby "Axe" Axelrod ( played by Damian Lewis ) on an insider-trading charge. However, it's their wives ( played, respectively, by Maggie Siff and Malin Akerman ) who stand out in the early episodes, as Rhoades and Axelrod try to out-swagger each other.
Confucius Jane: In author Katie Lynch's Manhattan love story, Jane Morrow ( who helps out in her uncle's fortune-cookie factory ) meets another woman, Sutton St. James ( who must decide between a surgical residency and stem-cell research overseas )and sparks fly.
Ciroc Pineapple vodka: Maybe it's just because I've always been partial to pineapple ( and I know some people loathe flavored/infused spirits ), but this high-quality vodka is pretty smooth and tastyand can serve as the basis for a variety of cocktails.
