Compass Bar's pizzas ( www.compassbarchicago.com ): This Lincoln Park establishment, 433 W. Diversey Pkwy., certainly has all the standards of contemporary bar-eateries, including large-screen television screens, an impressive beer listing and appetizers/entrees. However, what may bring people from miles away to this neighborhood business are the wood-fired pizzasincluding a crab-and-calamari item that is certainly not to be missed.
Core Power ( www.CorePower.com ): For years, I've been using Core Power after workoutsespecially some of the really brutal ones that strength coaches/trainers have put me through. Core Power is a real milk protein drink made from low-fat, lactose-free milk and real honeyand it comes in several flavors.
Innovation Lab at Harold Washington Library ( cplmakerlab.wordpress.com ): Libraries are not just about books. Created in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry, the library's Maker Lab offers the public an introduction to technology and equipment. The lab offers access to a variety of design software such as Trimble Sketchup, Inkscape, Meshlab and Makercam as well as equipment like three 3-D Printers, laser cutters, a milling machine and vinyl cutter.
Troquet River North ( troquetrivernorth.com ): This casual French-themed neighborhood spot, at 111 W. Huron St. ( adjacent to the Hotel Felix ), has some very attractive options. High points include the duck breast, the Amish chicken breast, the cheese plate and the salads.
McCanick ( DVD out May 20; www.facebook.com/McCanick ): In this very entertaining movie, Cory Monteith ( in one of his last roles ) portrays drug dealer/male prostitute Simon Weeksand he has the title character, narcotics detective Eugene "Mack" McCanick ( played by David Morse ) in hot pursuit after Weeks gets out from prison. Toward the end, the movie takes a turn I certainly wasn't expecting, but that Windy City Times readers will relish. The film co-stars Ciaran Hinds and the very hot Mike Vogel.
