GLAAD honors Kelly Ripa, Thomas Roberts
GLAAD Media Award recipients were announced in 15 of this year's 31 media categories at the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Waldorf Astoria New York on May 9.
Television journalist Thomas Roberts received the Vito Russo Award ( with Lynda Carter presenting ) while Kelly Ripa was honored with the Excellence in Media Award ( with good friend Anderson Cooper presenting ).
Among the other honorees were Showtime's L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin ( Outstanding Documentary ) and Time's "The Transgender Tipping Point," written by Katy Steinmetz ( Outstanding Magazine Article ).
Woman Made Gallery releases report
In conjunction with its forthcoming exhibition "The Gallery Tally Poster Project," Woman Made Gallery ( WMG ) has issued a report on gender representation in U.S. commercial galleries, based on data the staff collected in 2013.
The report consists of an infographic and accompanying analytic essay interpreting the data and commenting on the study's broader cultural and historical implications, written by Joanna Gardner-Huggett, associate professor and department chair of history of art and architecture at DePaul University in Chicago.
Among other things, the report shows that Chicago earns second place for women artists securing solo gallery exhibitions, at 40 percentonly behind Miami's 44 percent. Eight major cities/metropolitan areas were evaluated, including Boston, Chicago and Houston.
'Queer Queens of Qomedy' in Lake View May 31
National headliner Poppy Champlin is bringing her "Queer Queens of Qomedy" show back to Chicago.
She and lesbian Karen Williams will share the bill with the eChicago comedian Gwen LaRoka on Sunday, May 31, at 5 p.m. at The Chicago Laugh Factory, 3175 N. Broadway.

Rock 'n' Roll LGBT party May 30
In Demand Entertainment will present the 30th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Viewing Party and 5th annual Memories of a Mini-Ball Saturday, May 30, at Grub Chicago, 1230 W. Taylor St., with Chef Emanuel Washington.
Organizers are inviting LGBTQIAGNC ( lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, allies, and gender non-conforming ) youth and adults.
The screening is slated to start at 7 p.m., with the memorial tribute at 9-10 p.m., the variety show at 10-11 p.m. and the mini-ball at 11 p.m.-midnight.
