Openly gay community organizer Kevin B. Morrison will face off against incumbent Republican 15th District Cook County Board Commissioner Timothy Schneider in the general election on Nov. 6. Schneider, an ally of Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, is currently serving his third term in office and is chairing Illinois' Republican Party.

This comes after a protracted dispute over the March 20 primary election vote counts between Morrison and his former Democratic challenger Ravi Raju. ( Morrison won by 10 votes. ) Raju conceded to Morrison in a phone call April 20 and has pledged his full support to flip the district from red to blue. Plans are underway to have a unity event with Raju in the future.

"I am proud to be running as the first openly LGBTQ Cook County board commissioner," said Morrison. "I count myself fortunate to have received the support of the LGBTQ community and our LGBTQ elected officials. Now more than ever, it is important to recognize the achievements of LGBTQ individuals throughout history, and as commissioner I would strive for equitable treatment and the protection of our vital services for our community."

Morrison will be holding numerous fundraising events in the coming months including a Pride Month event at Sidetrack on Wed., June 13, 6-8 p.m. The host committee includes LGBT elected officials from across the state—Alds. Tom Tunney, James Cappleman, Deb Mell, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and Raymond Lopez; state Reps. Greg Harris, Kelly Cassidy and Sam Yingling and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Debra Shore among others.
