Dining news: Restaurant openings; famed chef dies

—The Mexican restaurant Cantina 1910 will open in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood on Sept. 16 at 5025 N. Clark St. at 8 p.m. The culinary team is led by Executive Chef Diana Davila, with dishes like chorizo de chivo ( goat chorizo, huatape verde, sunchoke mash and pan-fried chochoyotes ), sweet potato panuchos and shrimp ceviche. —DMK Burger Bar and Fish Bar have opened at Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave. Menu items are $3-$24. Unique to the Navy Pier locations will be a children's menu, a walk-up take-out window featuring adult house-made frozen beverages, and the only new outdoor seating space on the pier.

—Kerry Simon, a Las Vegas-based "Rock n' Roll Chef" and Iron Chef alum, has died at age 60, according to E! Online. He passed away on Sept. 11 after a two-year battle with the brain disease multiple system atrophy. Prior to his death, he was confined to a wheelchair and was unable to speak as a result of his illness, which is incurable. In Chicago, Simon was also behind Chuck's: A Kerry Simon Kitchen, in the Hard Rock Hotel. The restaurant's website reads, in part, "We will be forever grateful for his rock-n-roll approach to modern cuisine, boundless energy and gentle spirit."

—In honor of National Cheeseburger Day on Friday, Sept. 18, Adamus ( in the Silversmith Hotel, 10 S. Wabash Ave. ) is offering its prime-beef item that features Midwestern-raised grain-fed Angus beef, potato bun, house-made chipotle aioli, tobacco onions and Carr Valley applewood smoked cheddar cheese. On National Cheeseburger Day, guests can enjoy the Adamus cheeseburger ( served with house fries ) and any craft beer on the menu for $10.

—Belly Shack, 1912 N. Western Ave., if offering different styles of hot dogs for the "dog days of summer" on Sept. 15-18. Items include The MAD Dog ( Sept. 15; Korean BBQ, ssam paste, kimchi, green scallions, fried onions ), The Curry "Chili" Dog ( Sept. 16 ), The Nacho Dog ( Sept. 17 ) and The Hoagie Dog ( Sept. 18 ).

—George Kovach is the new pastry chef at TWO, 1132 W. Grand Ave. Kovach's creations include, among other items, a pumpkin cheesecake with pumpkin sorbet, candied pepitas, caramelized white chocolate and cocoa nibs; and a chocolate pot de creme with hazelnut ice cream and chocolate crunch. The pastry chef brings years of experience in his specialty, crafting menus for Rocksalt in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Manhattan's Craft New York.

—Troquet River North, 111 W. Huron St., is offering a few specials to celebrate the traditional Bavarian beer festival. During Sept. 19-Oct. 4, diners can indulge in two local Chicago Oktoberfest craft brews, as Revolution Oktoberfest and Two Brothers Atom Smasher Octoberfest Lager will both be available for $5. Additionally, Chef Tim Davidson will be serving a house-marinated sauerbraten sandwich with pickled red cabbage on a pretzel bun alongside house-made frites for $12.

—Bon Appetit presents Chicago Gourmet and Charlie Trotter's Culinary Education Foundation have announced "A Toast to Charlie Trotter," presented by American Express. Chef Emeril Lagasse will host. The event will take place Friday, Sept. 25, 1-3 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Dr., in the Crystal Ballroom. Tickets are $175 and go on sale Sept. 3; visit ChicagoGourmet.org .

—Trinity United Church of Christ's annual Farmers Market will take place Saturdays through Sept. 26 at 95th and Eggleston streets, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Among the items offered are produce grown by Black-owned farms, homemade baked goods, body moisturizing products, specialty blended teas and honey, health and fitness sessions ( yoga, Zumba ), and custom-crafted jewelry and clothing. —The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce has officially opened ticket sales to the 4th annual Wicker Park Bucktown Fall Dinner Crawl, which will take place Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6-9 p.m. There will be Fork, Knife, Spoon and Plate routes, with each featuring different restaurants. —Tickets are on sale for the 7th Annual OctoberFeast, an Oct. 6 ( 5-10 p.m. ) tasting tour featuring River North restaurants. Hosted by the River North Business Association, OctoberFeast showcases specialty food and drink from participating restaurants as well as a culminating after-party. —On Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., Evanston's Koi Fine Asian Cuisine & Lounge will host the first in a series of Chefs' Table events with a "Flavors of Fall" tasting dinner. Some of the items to be served in the six-course dinner include sushi and sashimi, walnut shrimp, salmon with black-bean sauce and chocolate lava cake. —Meals on Wheels Chicago ( MOWC ) will be hosting 60 of Chicago's chefs and more than a dozen mixologists at its 27th annual Celebrity Chef Ball on Friday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m.-12:30 a.m., at Morgan Manufacturing, 401 N.
