—SafeHouse Chicago, 60 E. Ontario St., will be offering Cinco de Mayo specials all day on Friday, May 5. The featured items are Street Tacos ( $5 each ), Corona bottles ( $5 each ) and a nachos combo ( $20 ) that includes SafeHouse Camp Stanley Nachos and four Coronas.

—On Cinco de Mayo ( Friday, May 5 ), Schaumburg's Tokio Pub will be featuring half-priced tacos for lunch and through happy hour ( ending at 6 p.m. ). —Beatrix, for Cinco de Mayo, will have its the Taco Bar at Streeterville, or the Chilaquiles Bar at River North through 3 p.m. Guests can pair items with a pineapple-habanero margarita for $15.

—For the second consecutive year, a Chicago restaurant took home top honors at the James Beard Foundation Awards, as Topolobampo ( owned by Rick and Deann Bayless ) was named Outstanding Restaurant during the annual black-tie gala at the Civic Opera House on May 1, The Chicago Tribune noted. In 2016, Alinea won top honors as Outstanding Restaurant. In the only other category with a Chicago winner, Monteverde Pastifico's Sarah Grueneberg won in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category.

—The inaugural Greektown Mediterranean Wine Fest will take place Saturday-Sunday, May 6-7. The fest's eponymous location is in the heart of Greektown on South Halsted Street in the West Loop between Jackson Boulevard and Van Buren Street. Fest hours are 12-9 p.m. both days, and ticketed tastings take place each afternoon at 2-6 p.m. The cost of a one-day individual wine tasting pass is $40, which allows the purchaser to sample ( with a souvenir wine glass ) up to 15 one-and-a-half-ounce wine samples. —Cornerstone Restaurant Group has announced Chef Craig Couper as executive chef at Michael Jordan's Restaurant in Oak Brook. Couper will continue to serve in the same capacity at Michael Jordan's Steak House in Chicago, and was tapped to support development on the new concept under the Michael Jordan brand umbrella, set to open this summer.

—Chop Shop, 2033 W. North Ave., has unveiled new seasonal menu items and cocktails. Items include burrata ( $12 ), chicken thigh and caper berries ( $16 ) and blade steak ( $22 ) as well as drinks like Snow Melt Sour ( Breckenridge Reserve Bourbon, Nardini Mndorla, pineapple, demerara and Anogstura bitters ) and Stolen Mule ( Stolen Smoked Rum, Stirrings Ginger Liqueur, pineapple and lime ). Also, Chop shop offers Butcher's Burger ( $15 ), with half a pound of prime butcher's blend sourced from the in-house butcher and topped with aged cheddar, charred red onions, bacon & Chop Shop's secret sauce.

—Athena, 212 S. Halsted St., has opened its a new 80-seat patio that joins its current 80-seat outdoor patio. When combined with the rest of the restaurant, which has a retractable roof, Athena can seat nearly 300 guests outside in total during summer months. Also, Pegasus, 130 S. Halsted St., has a 120-seat rooftop veranda that offers guests views of the Chicago skyline. Open at 4 p.m. daily, mezethes ( small plates designed for sharing ) are available in lieu of the regular menu.

—On Sunday, May 14, Dusek's Board & Beer, 1227 W. 18th St., will offer a Mother's Day brunch ( 9 a.m.-3 p.m. ) with various treats, including a spring vegetable strata that includes a bed of soft brioche, layered with seasonal grilled ramps, fresh purple asparagus and shaved Parmesan. —Shaw's Crab House Chicago, 21 E. Hubbard St., is celebrating Mother's Day with a Sunday brunch buffet priced at $75 for adults as well as $20 for kids 12 and younger. The buffet will feature a Grand Hot Buffet line with classic breakfast fare, plus Shaw's specialties, an omelet-and-waffle station with 13 available ingredients and the surf-and-turf station that includes lobster bisque, king crab legs and hand-carved beef. —For Mother's Day, French restaurant Bistronomic, 840 N. Wabash Ave., will offer a prix fixe menu. The three-course Mother's Day brunch menu will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; the cost is $42 per person, or $56 with the addition of bottomless mimosas, exclusive of tax and gratuity. —Brindille, 534 N. Clark St., will be offering a Mother's Day tea on Sunday, May 14, 2-5 p.m. The tea service will feature Chef Carrie and Pastry Chef Craig's creations. —Italian Village Restaurants, 71 W. Monroe St., invites moms to take a trip to Tuscany for a Italian Mother's Day feast. Available from noon to midnight, specials will include Mother's Blush ( bright-pink cocktail made especially for moms combining gin, fresh strawberries, basil and agave nectar, topped with prosecco; $12.50 ); spinach salad with salmon ( $26.50 ); and baked bone-in Virginia ham ( with pineapple glaze, served with scalloped potatoes and seasonal vegetables; $19.95 ). Some of the new items include baby gem lettuce Caesar salad, grilled Spanish octopus, jumbo lump crab cake, Alaskan black cod and foraged mushrooms. —In recognition of National Burger Month, Hakka Bakka Kati Rolls, 1251 W. Fullerton Ave., will offer a lamb shammi burger during the month of May, available for $8. —The National Restaurant Association ( NRA ) announced the lineup of the nation's top celebrity chefs to share their culinary know-how on the World Culinary Showcase stage at the National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show®, taking place at Chicago's McCormick Place on May 20-23. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the latest cooking practices and trends from Top Chef Masters winner Rick Bayless, Worst Cooks in America host Anne Burrell and Top Chef All Stars competitor Fabio Viviani; others slated to appear include Stephanie Izard, Ming Tsai and Robert Irvine. The World Culinary Showcase demonstrations run all four days of the NRA Show.
