Deportation protest at Gary/Chicago Airport Jan. 18
2019-01-15

facebook twitter google +1 reddit email

A coalition of social justice, immigration advocacy, anti-capitalist and left-wing organizations will be gathering at the Gary/Chicago International Airport to peacefully protest deportation flights on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.

United under the banner #StopGaryDeportations, the coalition is organized by Northwest Indiana Resistance ( NWIR ) with support from Chicago Democratic Socialists of America's ( CDSA ) Immigrants' Rights Committee.

While Chicago and Gary are both officially Welcoming Cities, they have long cooperated with the Department of Homeland Security and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) to detain and deport immigrants and refugees from Northwest Indiana, Chicago and the surrounding communities. The Gary/Chicago Airport, Gary Jet Center and Chicago City Council are all complicit in allowing ICE to operate with impunity in the Chicagoland/Northwest Indiana area. Shamefully, these entities continue to profit from deportations that tear communities and families apart.

Speakers will be Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Chicago Alderman, 35th Ward; Ruth Needleman, NWIR; Gaby Benitez, Detention Watch Network; Byron Sigcho Lopez, Candidate for Chicago Alderman, 25th Ward.
