Former U.S. President George H.W. Bushthe 41st chief executive of the country, and one of only two individuals to be the father of another presidenthas died at 94 in Houston.
Bush's death happened several months after his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, passed away at 92.
Bush was president during 1989-92, losing a re-election bid to Democrat and Arkanasas Gov. Bill Clinton. He was also challenged by independent billionaire businessman Ross Perot. Previously, Bush was vice president under two-term leader Ronald Reagan.
Among the items associated with his term as president were the first Persian Gulf War and Bush's own "thousand points of light" conceptthe latter to describe community organizations' efforts to do good
Like Reagan, Bush is not considered a staunch ally of the LGBT community, although he signed the inclusive Hate Crimes Statistics Act in 1990, Advocate.com noted. However, Bush also was responsible for putting David Souter and Clarence Thomas ( the latter considered to be extremely anti-LGBT ) to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2013, though, Bush was a witness to a same-sex wedding in Maine.
In addition to the 43rd president ( George W. Bush ), Bush is survived by son Jeb, a former Florida governor and 2016 presidential candidate; sons Neil and Marvin; daughter Dorothy; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter Robin died of leukemia as a child.
The 41st president will be buried alongside Robin and the former first lady at his presidential library in College Station, Texas.
