Founded in 2003 by Chef Art Smith and artist Jesus Salgueiro, Common Threads held its 10th annual fundraiser at Soldier Field. Reaching more than 15,000 children in Chicago schools alone, the program teaches children after school to cook and eat healthy meals.
The World Festival Chicago, held March 4, featured Food & Wine editor-in-chief Gail Simmons, Hillshire Brands' Jon Harris, journalist Candace Jordan and Beam's Minday Mackenzie as hosts. More than 60 top chefs from restaurants were represented in the The United Club. Some notables were Mercadito's Patricio Sandoval, Hearty Boys' Dan Smith, Tavernita's Greg Bastien and Boka's Carl Shelton.
Bravo's Top Chef television show was well-represented with Beverly Kim, Stephanie Izard and Takashi Yagihashi, along with Smith and Gail Simmons.
The organization plans on reaching 1million children with the cooking program in the next five years. Walmart just announced a $720,000 grant to Common Threads for expansion to 20 more schools in Chicago and Miami. Visit commonthreads.org . Photos and text by Jerry Nunn |
