Chicago Children's Museum celebrates International Family Equality Day on May 1 and kicks off two months of programming honoring the diversity of what constitutes family.
International Family Equality Day is a worldwide celebration recognizing and supporting LGBTQ families and gender non-conforming children.
All children ages 15 and under will receive free admission to the museum with access to all museum programming.
The activities May 1 will include:
International Family Equality Day Hospitality and Resource Room. Explore materials provided by the Family Equality Council, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital's Gender & Sex Development Program. From 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.: Snacks, music and stories with a focus on gender expression and LGBTQ families, as well as a variety of resources relevant to the LGBTQ parenting community will be available to all.
Family Flags: 12:30-2 p.m. Design and take home a vibrant fabric flag representing your family.
Rainbow Parachute: 2:15 p.m. Games with colorful, giant parachute.

Resource tables for information relevant to gender expansive children and the LGBTQ parenting community, including family-friendly book suggestions and teacher resources.
Rainbow Staircase
May 1-June 30, during museum hours
Transform the three-story staircase into a giant rainbow by adding colorful ribbons on each visit.
What Makes a Family? Chalk Wall
May 1-June 30, during museum hours
Share ideas about what makes a family on the 20-foot-long community chalkboard.
Collect a Color
Thursday, June 23, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Answer questions about color and, in the process, collect colored beads to make a rainbow bracelet or keychain.
