Erasure popped into Chicago for two nearly sold-out dates at the Congress Theatre Sept. 16-17.
Almost every gay boy in town, including Sean Hayes from Will & Grace, was in the audience. Erasurethe electronic duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bellmixed up the set with new songs off an album that won't be out until Oct. 3. Entitled Tomorrow's World, the new record ( produced by opener Frankmusik ) didn't take cues from a space theme but instead decided to use gargoyles on stage. Frankmusik led off the crowd with a fun rocking set and the slimmest backup singer around the block.
Erasure didn't take to the stage until almost 10 p.m., leading with the haunting "Sono Luminus." The duo then followed that with its last radio hit, "Always." The crowd went wild over such hits as "Victim of Love" and "I Love to Hate You." Bell spotted local club kid Jojo, describing him as a ghost in the middle of the spectators. Clarke then helped Bell slip out of his corset that was awkwardly laced up the back.
There were a few slow moments to the show, mainly because listeners weren't familiar with new tunes. Although, they finished on a high note with favorites "A Little Respect" and "Oh L'Amour," that didn't want to "Stop!" With a turnout like this, the group will surely return for more once the album is released.
On Sept. 16, Bell concluded the evening at the Boystown nightclub Spin, where he DJ'd into the wee hours of the morning. Follow more of the tour at www.erasureinfo.com . Photos for Windy City Times by Jerry Nunn
