May 10th, 2016 ( CHICAGO, IL ) - Chicago Filmmakers is proud to launch The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project — a free educational program for LGBTQ+ identified, gender non-conforming, and allied teens. During the course of the program, students will get hands-on digital filmmaking experience while focusing on media literacy - specifically the roles and effects of identity and representation in mainstream media. There are three upcoming sessions of The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project, and all classes will be held at Chicago Filmmakers ( 5243 N. Clark St. in Andersonville ).
SESSION 1: Saturdays, 3:30pm-6:30pm | June 4, 2016 - July 30, 2016
SESSION 2: Weekdays ( Monday-Friday ), 3:30pm-6:00pm | July 25, 2016 - August 5, 2016
SESSION 3: Saturdays, 3:30pm-6:30pm | August 6, 2016 - September 24, 2016
The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project is currently seeking applicants who are eager to express themselves through digital media. Applications to the program are open and available here - chicagofilmmakers.org/lgbtq-youth-media-project-application. Applications for Session 1 are due by May 27, 2016.
The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project will instruct students ages 13-17 in the immersive art of digital filmmaking, as well challenging them to look critically at the media they consume every day. Program instructors and special guests will empower students to take creative control in communicating positive and impactful depictions in their art.
"It's really important for queer and gender non-conforming youth to have the means of self-expression and storytelling," says Chicago Filmmakers Executive Director Brenda Webb. "The overall goal is to show these kids that they can and should have a stronger, louder voice in the current media conversation, and to help them develop the technical skills they need to share their stories."
The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project is completely tuition free for students accepted into the program. This is made possible through an IMPACT Grant from The LGBT Community Fund, an initiative of The Chicago Community Trust. For more information about The LGBTQ+ Youth Media Project, please contact Sarah Rubin at s.rubin@chicagofilmmakers.org or call 773-293-1447.
