Charles I. Hughesa longtime resident of the North Side retirement community Admiral at the Lake, and a former resident of Phoenix and New Yorkpassed away Nov. 30, 2012. He was 88.
He was preceded in death by Dale Barber, his partner of 40 years, and parents Jay D. Hughes and Mary Margaret Abell Hughes.
During his stint in the U.S. Navy, Charles was based in Hiroshima shortly after it was bombed, an experience that forever changed him and inspired him to become a lifelong activist for peace. He was a member of the Jane Adams Senior Caucus, a leader in the Lakeview Action Coalition, and was nominated into the City of Chicago Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. He was also a retired Cook County employee and AFSCME member.
A memorial service was held Jan. 12 at Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ, 615 W. Wellington Ave.
