Carlitos' World

Much to our surprise, my family and I received some great news a couple of weeks ago regarding one of my older sisters. It was an announcement that made both my parents very happy and the rest of us extremely excited. It was one of those times where the cigars had to be taken out and a toast needed to be said.

I was at work wrapping up my last interview of the day, preparing for broadcast. I remember my father calling me and confirming the news I heard from another family member online. I wasn't sure if he was joking or telling the truth, but I knew from his voice, which was filled with excitement, that somehow he was relaying some truth on the phone.

'We're having a baby!' is the news that spread throughout our extended family from Chicago to Colombia in just a matter of minutes. The family was indeed happy for my sister, who was one month pregnant, especially my parents, who would become grandparents for the second time.

The news about the baby, however, was a sign of relief for my oldest sister and me, who still don't have any babies of our own. The pressure of television life has pushed our dreams of having children a little behind, but we do plan on having them sometime soon.

Nonetheless, not having children, especially in a Latino family, becomes such a burden—having that over your shoulders. Sometimes we continue to try to make people happy, only realizing that WE are not. I learned at a very late age that the only person we should be concerned about impressing is really ourselves. No one else really matters or, rather, should matter as long as you are happy with yourself.

Until I have my own, I am very satisfied with my god-children (Cesar and Isabel), who, like any other children, have been a handful to raise. Not that I'm taking credit for raising them all their lives, but more because of the experience I have gained just being in their lives. As a god-father, you are the one they go to when they are selling their school candy or when their parents absolutely forbid them to do something.

It's a hard job, but somebody has to do it!

Being their role model is one of the pressures of being a good god-parent. You are the person they go to for advice or the person they go to tell their deepest secret to because you know they won't talk to their parents about certain things. So, it's important to me and should be important to any god-parent out there, to have their house in order so your god-children can be proud of you and mean it.

I, of course, will be getting more experience with this new arrival, which as of last week became twins.
