Dominican Catholic Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodreguez again denounced U.S. ambassador James "Wally" Brewster and his husband after the couple released video greetings in honor of Pride Month, Gay Star News reported June 23.
In the video, which was released June 12, Brewster and Satawake reflected on Brewster's first six months in his position as U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, and spoke of the importance of LGBT equality.
"June is LGBT Pride Month around the world, and we are proud to celebrate with the millions of LGBT individuals, along with democratic governments, and citizens of many cities and countries throughout the world, celebrating life, diversity, inclusion, compassion and equality," Brewster said in the video, adding that Dominicans had "embraced us at every turn and [welcomed] us into your country."
On June 19, Rodriguez, who referred to Brewster as being one of the "maricones," or "faggots," last year, was asked his thoughts on Brewster and Satawake's message.
"Diplomacy is not for that sort of thing, an absolutely negative propaganda," Rodriguez told Dominican Today. "I am against that; everybody knows it. My position is not new [and not just] because this man with this kind of attitude has now arrived."
Both Chicago businessmen, Brewster and Satawake were married in Washington, D.C., last November, shortly after Brewster was sworn into his new post.
