'Call Me By Your Name,' Dee Rees earn Oscar nods

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced early on Jan. 23and LGBT-themed film Call Me By Your Name was among those entries earning Academy Award nominations.
Among the nominations the film received were Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Timothee Chalamet), Original Song ("Mystery of Love," with music and lyrics by Sufjan Stevens) and Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory).
Also, a history-making development occurred when out screenwriter/director Dee Rees became the first African-American woman ever to be nominated for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for the movie Mudbound, which also saw singer/actress Mary J. Blige nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song.
The Shape of Water led all film nominees with 13. Among The Shape of Water's nods was Best Supporting Actor for Richard Jenkins, who portrayed a gay character; his competitors include Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards...) and Christopher Plummer (a last-minute substitute for now-disgraced actor Kevin Spacey in All the Money in the World).
The Best Actress category includes Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances (Three Billboards...), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Meryl Streep (The Post), who broke her own record with her 21st nomination.
The Best Director category had a couple rare nominations, in the forms of African-American Jordan Peele (Get Out) and female Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird); other nominees include Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread) and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water). Also, Mudbound's Rachel Morrison became the first female cinematographer to receive a nonimation, according to TheWrap; her next project is the superhero film Black Panther.
Among the snubs were actors Tom Hanks (The Post) and James Franco (The Disaster Artist), although the latter has been battling sexual-misconduct allegations. The movie BPMabout the ACT UP movement in Paris in the 1990swas expected to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but it did not receive a nod.
The ceremony came live from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater, as Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis made announcements. Jimmy Kimmel will host the Oscars on Sunday, March 4, live on ABC. |
