From a Chicago Gay Men's Chorus Press Release
Chicago, June 4, 2013 During the last two weekends in June (June 21-23 and June 30) at Pride Fest and the Pride Parade, Chicago Gay Men's Chorus (CGMC) will reconnect with alumni and affirm its bonds of friendship and community as an organization. CGMC has invited over 1,200 current and former members of the chorus to join in their celebration, including CGMC's founding Artistic Director, Kip Snyder.
"CGMC has come a long way from what started off as a group looking for a way to perform musical theatre repertoire," said Executive Director Kent Bartram. "It has grown over thirty wonderful years to become one of the most successful GLBT organizations in the city of Chicago." Since 1983, the chorus has almost quadrupled in size from 58 members to over 200 active members. In fact, several founding members of the chorus are still active with the organization today.
"I am very proud to be in the chorus for 30 years, to have been a part of something healthy, something that continues to attract new members and audiences," stated Danny Kopelson, who has been with the chorus since its first show. Throughout the history of the organization in addition to providing fun, campy entertainment, the chorushas provided cultural commentary on noteworthy moments in GLBT history from the AIDS crisis over the last 30 years, to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the current fight for marriage equality.
Through the years, CGMC has remained true to its roots and their passion for music and art. "CGMC has a history of delivering a unique entertainment," said Patrick Sinozich, Artistic Director. "We provide entertainment, education, inspiration and comfort to our audiences and plan on doing so for at least another 30 years."
