Boy GeorgeDJ and the iconic leader of '80s band Culture Clubleft hundreds of dancers wanting more at Museum of Contemporary Art's ( MCA's ) "Volume 1: Stardust" event Nov. 7.
For the event, the MCA transformed its atrium into a club, and included a private viewing of the exhibition "David Bowie Is"a visual and audio feast of photography, fashion, lyrics and performance material from Bowie's five-decade career. Boy George's DJ set concluded with attendees singing along to Bowie's "Space Oddity" and hugging one another when the night was over.
Boy George welcomed guests to honor Bowie's art and radical individualism by letting their "freak flag fly." Several attendees took him up on the invitation, and the crowd was sprinkled with Boy George and David Bowie lookalikes. Some wore heavy eye makeup reminiscent of Boy George's days in Culture Club. Others painted their faces with the iconic lightning bolt from Bowie's "Aladdin Sane" album cover. Also, a few guests dressed in drag, paying homage to Bowie's alter-ego female backup singers in the video for "Boys Keep Swinging."
The costumes and electronic house music made some in the audience nostalgic for a time when fashion and music explicitly challenged artistic and social boundaries. "I came tonight to remember what fashion used to be, what music used to be. The blend of David Bowie and Boy George just seemed too good to be true. Both were and are so iconic," Ricardo Santiago, a Chicago stylist and salon owner, said. |
