Chicago, IL — Oct. 20, 2016 — The MBLGTACC 2017 Planning Committee is pleased to announce that Patrisse Cullors, activist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter social movement, will deliver the keynote address on the opening evening of the Conference. The 2017 Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Trans & Ally College Conference ( MBLGTACC ) will welcome an expected 2,500 attendees from across the Midwest and around the country from February 17-19 for a weekend of workshops, activities, and community-building at Chicago's Navy Pier.
Cullors, an openly queer performance artist from Los Angeles, CA, started the Twitter hashtag #BlackLivesMatter ( with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi ) in response to George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the fatal shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. Since then, Cullors has been instrumental in leading the national conversation on law enforcement accountability and racial inequity in nearly every aspect of contemporary society. In recent years Cullors' advocacy work has earned her accolades such as the Mario Savio Young Activist of the Year Award and the Berger-Marks Foundation 2015 Edna Award, as well as inclusion on The Root's Top 100 List and mention as a "New Civil Rights Leader for the 21st Century" by the LA Times.
This year's MBLGTACC will mark the 25th Anniversary of the first conference and will center on the theme of "United in Solidarity." Since 1993 MBLGTACC has provided a safe space for LGBTQ+ people, as well as their allies, to gather as a social and collegiate community and to celebrate diversity across all intersections of queer identity. For more information or to register for the conference, please visit the MBLGTACC website at mblgtacc.org . |
