The National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer at the University of Illinois at Chicago will celebrate African-American breast cancer survivors at an event titled 'Hope Cometh.' The event will take place Oct. 7 at Mercy Hospital's Joyce Auditorium, 2525 S. Michigan, at 6 p.m.
The keynote speaker will be Annice Canady, the first woman to officiate a NCAA Division I football game and a three-time breast cancer survivor. She will discuss her battle with the disease and her goal to become the first female NFL referee.
The honorees at the ceremony will be Funmi Apantaku Onayemi, regional director of the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer at UIC, who will receive the Hope Cometh Community Service Award; and Dr. Monica Peek, assistant professor of medicine at University of
Chicago Hospitals, who will receive the Hope Cometh Medical Service Award.
