On June 16, bail was denied for high school senior Orlando Perez, who is accused of fatally shooting a transgender woman in her Southwest Side home May 31, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Perezwho is 18 and from the 7200 block of South Homan Streetreportedly provided an extensive confession to shooting Selena Reyes-Hernandez several times inside her home in the 3300 block of West 71st Street. After initially leaving Reyes-Hernandez's place because of her gender identity, Perez said he "kept seeing her face and it kept bothering him and he was mad as hell," according to prosecutors. Perez then returned with a gun, shooting the victim multiple times while revisiting twice.
Windy City Times discovered that a Chicago Police Department press release misgendered Reyes-Hernandez, calling her "a 37-year-old man."
Judge Arthur Wesley Willis denied bail for Perez, calling him a danger to the community. He is scheduled to return to court July 6.
