Longtime transgender activist Lohana Berkins died Feb. 5 after several weeks of hospitalization, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes, according to the Buenos Aires Herald.
In 2002, she applied for a job as a teacher at a public school. When authorities denied her the right to do so under her own name, she filed a complaint with Buenos Aires City's ombudsman's office, which ordered the school to respect her gender identity.
From her hospital room, Berkins delivered a message, translated here from publications such as La Nacion: "Dear sisters, my health is very critical and does not allow me to meet with you personally. So I want to thank them for their expressions of affection and convey a word through partner Marlene Wayar, whom I bequeath this post.
Many wins we obtained in these years. now it is time to resist, to fight for their continuity. the time of the revolution it is now, because the prison did not return anymore. I am convinced that the engine of change is love. love it they denied us our impulse is to change the world. All blows and contempt that I suffered, do not compare with the infinite love that surrounds me right now. Furia Transvestite always. A hug."
A wake was held for Berkins in the Buenos Aires city legislature.
