NEW YORK — LGBT rights groups around the world are slamming the Barilla Group, owners of Barilla Pasta, after Chairman Guido Barilla caused outrage in Italy after saying he would not consider using a gay family to advertise his products.

While the Barilla Group and Chairman Guido Barilla are walking back their comments, Tico Almeida and Freedom to Work, a national organization dedicated to ending workplace discrimination in the United States are urging the company to include LGBT people as part of the company's Equal Employment Opportunity policy.
"If Barilla is serious about including LGBT people at the dinner table, they should also give LGBT employees a fair shot to contribute in the workplace," said Tico Almeida, founder and president of Freedom to Work. "We urge the Barilla Group to update their equal employment opportunity policy to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, just as it already bans racial and religious discrimination."
