Anna in the Tropics Extended
2003-11-01

Victory Gardens Theater has added four more performances of its hit Midwest premiere of Anna in the Tropics, extending the run of gay writer Nilo Cruz' 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama at Victory Gardens through Oct. 31. Victory Gardens will then transfer Anna in the Tropics downtown, for an additional one-month run at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, Chicago. Call (312) 443-3800, www.Ticketweb.com .

Set in the sultry heat of 1929 Ybor City, Fla., Anna in the Tropics imagines the struggles and loves of Cuban-American factory workers who spent hour after steamy hour crafting tobacco leaves into something sublime. One routine is disrupted forever with the arrival of Juan Julian, a handsome new 'lector' whose job is to read literature to the workers.
