The American Family Association (AFA) has demanded that schools abandon a program called "Mix It Up at Lunch Day" (Oct. 30) that is aimed at breaking down barriers and reducing bullying in schools.
The Southern Poverty Law Center launched the program 11 years ago, according to a Huffington Post item. The AFA, however, claims it represents "a nationwide push to promote the homosexual lifestyle in public schools."
Equality Illinois is among the organizations condemning the efforts by the AFA and its state affiliate, the Illinois Family Institute, a press release stated.
"Mix It Up at Lunch Day" is currently in place at more than 2,500 schools, but this year at least 200 had canceled; the reason for the cancellations is unclear, the Post reported.
