ACLU asking court to reverse allowing group to intervene in transgender student case

CHICAGO — In November 2017, Nova Maday and the ACLU of Illinois filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against the Township High School District 211 in Palatine for denying Nova the use of the girls' locker room during physical education class and isolating her from other students because she is transgender. The goal of the suit is a court order requiring District 211 to stop segregating Nova and other transgender students but to treat them the same as non-transgender students with respect to their use of the locker room.
As the litigation progressed, the court allowed a group of outside parents and students from District 211 to intervene in the case. This group sought not only to deny Nova — and other students who are transgender in the District — full use of the locker room but to restroom facilities as well.
On Monday, Judge Thomas Allen will hear arguments on a motion to reconsider the motion allowing this outside group to intervene at Daley Center, 50 W Washington St. at 11a.m. Presenting will be John Knight, Director, LGBTQ and HIV Project, ACLU of Illinois; Ghirlandi Guidetti, Staff Attorney, LGBTQ and HIV Project, ACLU of Illinois and Jeffrey H.
