Nearly half a century ago, the eyes of the world were transfixed on a handful of roiling cities in which momentous events changed the course of history of nations and peoples around the globe. Chicago was one of the four foci of tumult around the world, along with Saigon, Paris and Prague.
A new exhibit features the work of photographer Stan Rosenstock, 1968—Vanished Realities, at Eyeporium Gallery.
Starting off with the shocking tet offensive in the heart of Saigon, turbulent 1968 saw riots in wesern nations and bloody battles in southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. It was a time of confrontation between east and west, young and old, communism and freedom, oppressors and oppressed, and between the conventional and counter-cultures. After 1968 the world would never be the same, and some seemingly permanent realities would vanish forever.
This new show features never-before-seen images, capturing vast changes in the faces of ordinary and extraordinary individuals who were part of the ferment, from police officers holding truncheons to idealistic protestors, from politicians to entertainers, all seen through the lens of a young Chicago photographer, Stan Rosenstock caught up in the hopes and fears tearing apart the city and the world.
Opening Reception: April 20, 6-9 p.m. Exhibition runs April 20 to June 24. At Eyeporium Gallery, 1431 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773-782-1744. Two blocks from the Damen Blue Line EL Stop in the heart of Wicker Park.
Eyeporium Gallery represents some of Chicago's most prominent artists Tony Fitzpatrick, Wesley Kimler, Bruce Riley, Marc Hauser, Julia Haw, Jason Brammer, Jojo Baby and Bernard Colbert. Eyeporium Gallery is owned by Annette Sollars who is a local philanthropist and Carron Little is gallery director.
