Joffrey offers sneak preview of 'Choreographers'
2014-02-05

On an extremely cold Tuesday night ( Jan. 28 ), a select audience got the opportunity to catch a sneak peek of The Joffrey Ballet's new piece "Contemporary Choreographers," which will be performed at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University Feb. 12-23.

The show will feature three choreographers—Christopher Wheeldon, Brock Clawson and Alexander Ekman. Clawson attended the preview at the Joffrey Tower, 10 E. Randolph St., and spoke of moving to Chicago the day after graduating high school to make a new life from his small town upbringing.

He plans to be married to his partner of 12 years this summer he stated for this behind the scenes audience. A snippet of his work, titled "Crossing Ashland," was performed, with questions from the crowd afterward.

Artistic Director Ashley Wheater supervised the Q&A, keeping things simple and focusing on the individual stories. Clawson said, "I wanted to pull it back from being over-the-top and make it effective."

A pas de deux, or partnering section, followed with a love story. Wheater suggested the dancers be two men to create a different dynamic in the rehearsal process that may one day grow into an upcoming project.

As far as costumes, shirtless men and short skirt-wearing women are part of this future Choreographer show. The openly gay Wheater teased, "Look for kilts, where it will be hard to tell the difference between men and women!"
