Statement from State Representative Sara Feigenholtz
Chicago, Ill. — State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, expressed her admiration for David Fite, the soon-to-be decorated Eagle Scout, on the completion of his Eagle rank assignment. Fite tied the last fabric strip onto the colorful fence outside of Nettelhorst Elementary School, located in the 12th district that Feigenholtz represents.
"David chose this as his Eagle Scout assignment after successfully lobbying the Boy Scouts of America to accept openly gay members. I couldn't be prouder to know this amazing young man," beamed Feigenholtz.
Nettelhorst students have completed the Fence Project for the past seven years. The Project began as a response to gay bullying that occurred at the school and continues to serve as a colorful reminder that "love is what we all have in common."
"David Fite exemplifies courage and leadership in our diverse neighborhood. His actions should serve as an example to all of us," Feigenholtz said.
David proposed his final Eagle Scout project in front of a group of Scout leaders, some in his troop, some he had never met before. He proposed that he would lead and organize a pride install at Nettelhorst and finish off at the Center on Halsted in June with a pride party for 40 homeless youths. David finished his presentation that included a speech, poster board with photos and in full uniform finished strong with words of tolerance and love and what it truly meant to be a boyscout.
