On July 27 a gathering will take place at Chicago's Ardmore Hollywood Beach to demonstrate trans* visibility.
A group of independent Chicago community members announced a beach-side pride event for the transgender community. Trans Pride will be celebrate the broad spectrum of transgender identity with a potluck picnic.
The group stated: "Trans Pride is one more way to increase trans visibility in Chicago. There have been other amazing transgender-focused events in the Windy City, including TGIF and Trans 100, and we hope this is another opportunity for the transgender community to celebrate the beauty and power of itself. There are so many ways of expressing trans-identity, and we hope Trans Pride provides a lasting, memorable moment for our community and our supporters to be proud of who we are and what we have to look forward to."
Chicago Trans* Pride is an independent and public gathering to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and resilience of the trans* community in Chicago. The trans* community has a lot to be proud of in 2014 and what better way to celebrate than at a lakefront beach party.
As beaches are traditionally not trans* affirming or body positive spaces, the gathering will stake claim in public space and join together to be present, visible, and proud. At noon, the group and allies will gather with flags and other visible transgender pride items. Guests are encouraged to bring and share: coolers, refreshments, sunblock and food.
There is no formal program but simply a space to gather and create visibility. The community requested Hollywood beach, widely known as Chicago's "Gay Beach", it will serve as a place to put transgender visibility front and center.
