The Beach Girl5, or BG5, are bringing their swimsuits to the 21st annual Dinah event in California at the end of the month. Featuring plenty of musical guests, including Natasha Bedingfield and Chely Wright, one of the longest-running lesbian events plans on being even bigger this year. Brooke, Dominique, Noreen, Mandy and Laura promise to prove how to party in Palm Springs. Windy City Times spoke with one of the members, Noreen Juliano.
Windy City Times: Hi, Noreen. Are you calling from California?
Noreen Juliano: Yes, I am in L.A. right now. I am from the Bay area but this is where I currently live.
Windy City Times: The five of you are appearing at this big party there coming up.
Noreen Juliano: We are performing at the Dinah Shore event. We will be performing songs from our album that came out in September of last year so we are excited.
Windy City Times: How did you get involved with Dinah?
Noreen Juliano: The gay community has been a big champion of our music. We were requested to perform at this event after people saw us at the gay clubs around the U.S.. We go where the fans are.
Windy City Times: Have you been to Chicago?
Noreen Juliano: Yes, we performed there on our very first tour in 2008. We plan on going back there sometime this year.
Windy City Times: The group met through volleyball?
Noreen Juliano: We are not volleyball players professionally but we booked a gig at a game. Each of us auditioned individually to form a group for the Professional Volleyball AVP tour. We did eighteen cities together and as that ended we didn't want the group to end. Usually when you are finished then you go do something else. We said BG5 started then. We started finding own sound. We stopped dancing in the sand in our bikinis and found our own identity.
Windy City Times: Did you have to audition originally?
Noreen Juliano: Yes, it was just a normal audition for that tour. We actually liked each other so we didn't want it to end.
Windy City Times: That is really lucky.
Noreen Juliano: It is rare to find that there are five girls that actually genuinely care about each other. We hang out with each other on our off time. We want people to check us out.
Windy City Times: I watched the E! episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians with you all in it.
Noreen Juliano: Did you like it?
Windy City Times: Of course; I love that show! How has it been working with Kris Jenner?
Noreen Juliano: It has been really great. She is sitting in the big meetings with our team. She is a very inspiring and motivating lady. She is really badass. She loves what she does and appreciates every moment. I learn a lot from her. You don't see many Hollywood families that are famous holding it together. There is so much to learn from her both business wise and personally.
Windy City Times: Would you do more reality shows?
Noreen Juliano: We are actually featured on the Khloe & Lamar show. So people will get to see us with the Kardashian family again. Rob is on the management team now so we show him the ropes and kick his ass a little bit.
Windy City Times: You opened for Justin Bieber?
Noreen Juliano: We did last year.
Windy City Times: Did you go see the [Bieber] movie Never Say Never?
Noreen Juliano: My mom is coming into town this weekend and I am going to see the movie with her.
Windy City Times: Fun! What is the current single that you have out now?
Noreen Juliano: "Scratch"
Windy City Times: Did you have to learn a lot of dancing to perform live?
Noreen Juliano: Most of us have been dancers in the past professionally whether it had been for artists, movies or films. There is a lot of choreography in our show. We work with Kevin Maher who is our choreographer and artistic director as well. We spend many an hour in the dance studio.
Windy City Times: Is there a girl group that BG5 has been influenced by?
Noreen Juliano: Girl groups that inspire us are En Vogue and Destiny's Child. To have the worldwide success of the Spice Girls would be fantastic. That would an ultimate goal of ours.
Windy City Times: Well, they had a movie, too, so you girls should get one.
Noreen Juliano: Sign me up!
