Activists from the Chicago-based group Queer to the Left ( Q2L ) appeared at the Magnificent Bride Wedding Expo at the Drake Hotel Feb. 20 dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants ( recently accused of promoting homosexuality by Focus on the Family ) .
Holding signs such as saying 'Marriage Amendments Are Not Magnificent,' they placed themselves at the entrance to the Expo, asking attendees if their marriages need 'protection' from gay marriage and if queer people are a 'threat' to them.
According to a Q2L release, supporters of anti-gay marriage amendments claim that marriage needs to be 'protected' or 'defended' from queer people.
However, Q2L member Michael Tajchman said that ' [ t ] hese amendments are just outright discrimination, and they help validate other kinds of discrimination against same-sex couples and non-married people, such as denial of benefits.'
Q2L is a Chicago-based LGBT group committed to working in coalition with queers and non-queers to promote justice along economic, gender, racial, and sexual lines. For more info, see www.queertotheleft.org .
