van der Sloot sentenced for killing reported lesbian

Joran van der Sloot was sentenced Jan. 13 to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, CNN.com reported.

On Jan. 11, the Dutch national, 24, confessed to the charges of "qualified murder" and simple robbery. He was also ordered to pay almost $75,000 to the victim's family

In 2010, Windy City Times cited an Advocate.com item that stated Flores was reportedly a lesbian.

The item stated that former FBI agent Brad Garrett told ABC News that hotel-surveillance footage showed that, regarding Flores, "This may be a new experience for her to go to a hotel room with somebody she met just a few hours later. It also may play into her own issues with sexual identity problems." ABC News' George Stephanopoulos then added that Flores identified with being a lesbian, "so there may have been some shame or discomfort involved." Garrett speculated that Flores may have been killed after rejecting van der Sloot's sexual advances.

van der Sloot was once the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama resident Natalee Holloway in Aruba. On Jan. 12, Alabama Probate Judge Alan King signed an order declaring Holloway legally dead, as her body was never found, according to CNN.com .
