CHICAGO State Representative Kelly Cassidy ( D-Chicago ) is convening a special meeting of her Public Safety Community Advisory Committee to address recent gun violence in the district. The meeting is open to the public and will be held on Tuesday, January 17th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at her Constituent Service Office located at 5533 N. Broadway.
"I have worked with law enforcement my entire career and one of the biggest problems they face is the number of guns on our street," Cassidy said. "I am pursuing legislation to keep guns out of the hands of gang members, and I want to know your ideas to get firearms off the street and make our community safer."
Cassidy has introduced House Bill 3809 to prevent more guns from getting into the hands of gang members by increasing penalties on their suppliers, who knowingly arm gang members. Gangs have figured out that new, younger, members are more likely to pass background checks to gain access to guns, and this law is meant to crack down on gun sales and curb gang recruitment. To prevent old or unwanted guns from ending up in the wrong hands, Cassidy has also introduced House Bill 3845 to enable local police stations to collect firearms for secure disposal.
Cassidy is providing the necessary tools the community needs to come together and improve public safety.
"Common sense gun laws like these can take firearms out of the hands of those who would use them for violence in our community," Cassidy said. "Please share your ideas on how we can provide our community with the necessary tools to come together and improve public safety."
For more information on Cassidy's Public Safety Community Advisory Committee, to RSVP or to request a "Neighborhood Watch" window sign, please contact Rep. Cassidy's full-time constituent service office at ( 773 ) 784-2002 or at RepCassidy@gmail.com .
