A Roseland man disguised in women's clothing shot and wounded a neighbor during a July 23 game of dice on the Far South Side, prosecutors claim.
Supermarket grocery bagger LePaul Williams, 35, allegedly donned a black wig, pink halter-top and blue pajama bottoms before shooting 23-year-old Brian Stalling outside his home. The incident occurred on the first block of East 102nd around 1 a.m.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the two men had fought earlier that evening over a woman. "I never seen [Williams] wear women's clothing before," Stalling's godmother, Melisa Wooten, told the Chicago Tribune. "He planned the whole thing so he could get closer to [Stalling] to shoot him."
Stalling was able to flee the scene, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, but Williams used his 9mm gun to smash the windows out of Stalling's car, which Williams proceeded to douse with lighter fluid.
Assistant State's Attorney Toni Giancola claimed July 24 in Cook County Central Bond Court that Williams told witnesses "if they told on him, they would get it too." Williams then barricaded himself in his house until SWAT team members forcibly removed him, police reports stated.
Stalling was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was treated for a bullet wound to the chest.
Williams was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, and Judge Ramon Ocasio III ordered Williams to be held on a $2 million bail. Giancola said in court July 24 that the wig, the halter-top and a cartridge matching the magazine found in Stalling's car were taken as evidence from Williams' home.
A media representative at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Williams' next court date is set for July 29 in Branch 38, 727 E. 111th St.
