House Bill 3184 amended to include anti-gay adoption language
Chicago, IL - The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA) has been monitoring developments in Springfield as the Catholic Conference continues to push legislation allowing religious institutions an exemption with regards to adoption which would allow them to turn away couples that do not hold to their religious beliefs. The most recent attempt, an amendment to House Bill 3184, is a last minute effort to pass this legislation.
"We have been aware of this amendment and we are monitoring the legislation, but by no means are we in panic mode yet," said TCRA Executive Director Anthony Martinez. "It seems to me that this is a hallow attempt that some anti-equality legislators are using to raise funds and galvanize their base. If our community feeds into that, it only adds fuel to the anti-gay, anti-LGBT sentiment that we are seeing here and echoed in legislatures across the nation. Although we are monitoring this legislation, due to the time frame and the urgency of many outstanding issues before the legislature, this seems to be the last thing that should be focused on. We still have budget items that need to be considered. Let's focus on that. With that said, our legislative team is working to ensure that this dies in committee."
"While we don't think there is time or desire in the legislature to move this bill, Springfield is unpredictable," stated Lowell Jaffe, Political Director for TCRA. "There is a coalition of organizations on the ground in Springfield of which we are a part of, and due to timing it seems this will not go anywhere. In order for this amendment to move it first needs to go through the Assignments Committee, which is highly unlikely given the time frame. Then it would need to pass Executive where it has already failed. It's tragic that another organization is creating alarm without need and are using this amendment to raise money. It not only exploits our community, it also creates a distraction for those doing the real work on the ground."
