Wisconsin has become the first state with a constitutional amendment banning civil unions and gay marriage to include domestic partnerships for same-sex couples, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Couples can apply for a declaration of domestic partnership starting Aug. 3.
Gay-rights advocates also contend that Wisconsin is the first Midwestern state to have its legislature establish legal protections for same-sex couples.
However, supporters of a marriage ban may file an appeal soon, arguing that this latest development creates a legal status that is on par with marriage.
