Lives at Stake virtual panel discussion on voting, LGBTQI displaced persons
7:30pm

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - Rainbow Railroad, joined by the Chicago Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, will host a virtual panel discussion Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m , CT, focusing on the life and death implications of the 2020 Presidential election for LGBTQI displaced persons, including refugees and asylum-seekers. Entitled, "Lives at Stake," the event will include a high-powered panel featuring Rainbow Railroad Executive Director Kimahli Powell, Chicago immigration attorney Mike Jarecki, and Mira Patel, a fellow at the Truman National Security Project and former U.S. State Department appointee under the Obama administration. Patel helped launch the LGBTQI-focused Global Equality Fund and co-authored the first-ever Presidential Memorandum on international LGBT rights. The panel will also include Uche Onwa, Co-Director of Community Organizing for the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project, and Devon, Director of Programs for Rainbow Railroad. Rainbow Railroad is the only international organization dedicated to bringing to safety LGBTQI persons fleeing violence and persecution around the world. The Toronto founded organization, with charitable staus in both Canada and the U.S., has assisted over 900 individuals to date. "Thousands of LGBTQ+ displaced persons desperately seek our assistance," noted Chicago board member Bruce Koff. "They, and those dedicated to saving their lives, are watching the U.S. Presidential election with intense concern. With so many lives in the balance, this event offers Chicagoans a unique opportunity to understand the legal and human rights implications of the U.S. election for LGBTQI displaced persons and Rainbow Railroad's plans for programs and advocacy regardless of the election outcome." The program is free. For information and to register visit rainbowrailroad.eventbrite.ca .
