White church laments sin of racism through art
12:00pm

Chicago, September 23, 2020 - St. John's Episcopal Church on Chicago's Northwest Side is hosting the installation of a sculpture by local artist Joshua Longbrake. The work, titled Confession, was constructed from a wooden church font (used for baptism rites), water, red dye, rubber, electric pump, silicone, steel, acrylic, timer, and bullet shells. The font is installed at the entrance to the church garden with the explanation "We lament the Christian Church's role in institutional racism. We repent our part in sustaining structures of racism. We resolve to repair the damage done." The sculpture can be viewed in person or at https://www.stjohnschicago.com/?p=4829 St. John's has an active Antiracism Team whose mission is "to identify, disrupt, and dismantle racism within our church and our community." The team has sponsored African-American, Latinx, and "Wrestling with White Supremacy" Book Groups, installed an Indigenous Peoples' land acknowledgment plaque, held a vigil for George Floyd and are currently working on a project for children to recognize and teach Indigenous languages. More information about the team's activities can be found at https://www.stjohnschicago.com/?p=3684. "Understanding that current injustices in our city are rooted in our own religious history is an important first step in recognizing the invisible poison and silent privilege that infects our own local church. This sculpture urges us to do that and take the next step, to acknowledge that sin," says the Rev. Kara Wagner Sherer, Rector of St. John's, "AND we have to be aware that white institutions saying the "right" things and thinking they've done the thing is to continue to inflict harm. We have to spend as much time and energy disrupting and dismantling as we have done building and benefiting from the sins of racism. We have a long road ahead of us." About Joshua Longbrake Joshua is an artist, father, pastor, wood worker and Chicago area resident. In his free time he prays for his two young boys to sleep longer.
