Mikva: Democracy is a Verb, screen to screen 7:00pm
Abner Mikva was a tireless advocate for democracy and ethical government and believed fervently in the power of young people to effect change. DEMOCRACY IS A VERB chronicles both his remarkable career as a U.S. Congressman, Federal Judge and White House Counsel and his legacy organization, the Mikva Challenge. The film features his protégée, President Barack Obama, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, political consultant David Axelrod, former Wall Street Journal reporter Al Hunt and advisor to 7 Presidents, Newton Minow. The film is also a sweeping story of Mikva challenging the Daley machine, the National Rifle Association and the neo-Nazis who invaded Skokie, Illinois in 1978.
SCREEN TO SCREEN: On Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7pm CDT, the Film Center will present a panel discussion with director Bob Hercules, political consultant David Axelrod, Congresswoman (and film subject) Jan Schakowsky, and Mikva Challenge student Schyler Travis, moderated by "Chicago Tonight" host Phil Ponce (WTTW).
