  TODAYS GAY & LESBIAN EVENTS

Saturday September 19th

Rosh Hashanah Shofar pop-ups and other events
5:00pm

Local Jewish spiritual community Mishkan Chicago, 4001 N. Ravenswood Ave., is merging ancient ritual with film, theater and music production to create unique programming for the 2020 Jewish New Year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sept. 12-28, Mishkan will offer live streaming services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, along with in-person events like a sing-a-long drive-in ( for members only ) and shofar pop-ups across Chicagoland. The Selichot Drive-In Sing-a-Long will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. Participants will gather in cars at the Davis Theatre Pop-Up Drive-In at the Lincoln Yards Lot, 1684 N. Throop St. Registration is $36 per car, although free streaming is also available. Shofar pop-ups ( free ) will be at 5:30 p.m. on Rosh Hashanah ( Saturday, Sept. 19 ). Following the shofar blasts, participants are invited to a socially distant, immersive ritual of Taslich, where Jews symbolically cast-off past mistakes and bad vibes by tossing pebbles into local bodies of water. Masks will be required and hand sanitizer will be available. The pop-up locations ( most of which are in Chicago ) are Arrington Lagoon at Dawes Park, 1631 Sheridan Rd., Evanston; Horner Park, North Center, 2741 W. Montrose Ave.; Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, downtown Chicago; Humboldt Park, Sledding Hill, Bunker Hill, Kedzie Avenue; and North Pond Nature Sanctuary, 2610 N. Cannon Dr., in Lincoln Park. Registration, available to both past members and the general public, is at MishkanChicago.org/shabbat-holidays/high-holidays. Tickets cost $60 per individual ( $36 for members ) or $120 per household ( $72 for members ) for all services. Also, the service schedule includes Erev Rosh Hashanah, on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.; Rosh Hashanah ( Day 1 ), on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 9:30 a.m.; Rosh Hashanah Family Services, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10:30 a.m.; Kol Nidrei, on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Yom Kippur, on Monday, Sept. 28, at 9:30 a.m. ( daytime service ) and 7:30 p.m. ( Neilah and Havdallah ); and Yom Kippur Family Services, on Monday, Sept. 28, at 10:30 a.m.
