Side by Side with the Chicago Philharmonic virtual event
3:00pm

Chicago, IL - (July 23 2020) After the organization's first-ever virtual Side by Side with the Chicago Philharmonic event on June 21 2020, Chicago Philharmonic brings the hugely popular virtual event back on August 9 with a new, exciting program featuring diverse composers. The program features works by Joseph Boulogne, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges (a beloved Classical era composer), Antonin Dvořak (an iconic Czech composer with a deep love of America), and William Grant Still (the 20th century neo-Romantic genius often referred to as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers"). 2020 is the sixth summer of Chicago Philharmonic's signature community engagement program, presented as part of the Chicago Park District and Mayor Lori Lightfoot's Night Out in the Parks series. With respect for social distancing measures, the program's virtual adaptation brings opportunities to students and community musicians across the city of Chicago, encouraging musicians of all ages and backgrounds to work with Chicago Phil's world-class musicians. The event starts with a rehearsal led by Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Scott Speck. Next, participants will be divided in breakout sessions led by Chicago Philharmonic musicians. Culminating the experience is a final run through that will be recorded by each participant on their cell phone. After the event, Chicago Philharmonic staff will create and share the composite performance video with the world for all to enjoy. The program for the concert will be as follows: Joseph Boulogne, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges Symphonie XI No. 2, I. Allegro Antonin Dvořak Symphony No. 9, E Minor (From the New World), Excerpt from II. Largo William Grant Still Symphony No.1 (Afro-American Symphony), III. Humor: Animato Sunday, August 9 3:00-3:50pm rehearsal 3:55-4:20pm break out sessions 4:30-5:00pm recording "performance" 5:00-5:30pm optional Q&A session with Maestro Speck Since the Chicago Philharmonic launched Side by Side in 2015, the program has been received enthusiastically by participants and audience members alike and has steadily expanded.
