Friday June 5th

Cook County Commissioner Kevin B. Morrison will host a live Pride Virtual Town Hall
11:00am

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -June 3, 2020-In honor of Pride Month, Cook County Commissioner Kevin B. Morrison will host a live Pride Virtual Town Hall on Friday at 11:00 a.m. For everyone's safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, many Pride events and activities have been rescheduled or cancelled. Commissioner Morrison will be joined by community leaders to discuss how everyone can still safely celebrate Pride Month while following public health and physical distancing guidelines. The group will also address how the LGBTQ community can stand in solidarity with Black LGBTQ people and the whole Black community following the recent murders of Black citizens. The town hall will be livestreamed on Commissioner Morrison's Facebook page. Commissioner Morrison will be joined on the live discussion by Caroyln Pinta, The Pinta Pride Project Inc.; Myles Brady Davis, Communications Manager and Press Secretary at Equality Illinois; and Jerome' Holston, Executive Director of the LGBT Chamber of Commerce of Illinois. Commissioner Morrison will moderate a discussion about why Pride Month is important, ways individuals can celebrate Pride Month, the impact COVID-19 has had on the LGBTQ community, and why the Census is important to the LGBTQ community. "Although we cannot be together in person this year, it is still incredibly important for us to celebrate Pride Month as best we can. We must recognize and reflect on the history of the LGBTQ movement, how far we have come, and maintain our focus on the work left to do in order to reach full equity for our community. Part of celebrating Pride is remembering our own history and how the events at Stonewall 50 years ago acted as a catalyst for our movement. We as LGBTQ people have activism in our DNA, and must stand in solidarity with our Black LGBTQ siblings, as well as all other marginalized communities," said Commissioner Morrison. Carolyn Pinta highlighted the opportunity for Pride events to amplify and support the message of the Black Lives Matter movement. "The Pinta Pride Project feels that holding a pride event with what is happening in our country is not the choice that all folks would make. We are saddened and sickened with the treatment of George Floyd and the many before him, and we strongly support Black Lives Matter," said Carolyn Pinta. "We will incorporate the message that we honor our black LGBTQ members by celebrating them and just wish to spread love and joy in the darkness." The Pride Virtual Town Hall is free and open to the public. Residents are encouraged to submit questions beforehand to https://bit.ly/2ynnt9P or District15@cookcountyil.gov. For more information, contact (847) 519-7674 or email District15@CookCountyIL.gov .
