SapphFest, a digital variety show
7:30pm

Violet Surprise Theatre Issues a Gay-at-Home Order! Just because the virus is a real showstopper doesn't mean that we have to stop putting on shows. We'll just put 'em online instead of onstage! Violet Surprise Theatre presents SapphFest, a digital variety show celebrating queer women and non-binary artists from all over the country and internationally, through storytelling, comedy, music, poetry, performance art, and more! Performers include: Ada Cheng (storytelling), Natalie Meisner (poetry), Lauren Harsh (comedy), Melody DeRogatis (music), KJ Whitehead (comedy), Jacqui Juarena (music and comedy), Khloe Janel (poetry), Sammie James (comedy), Osiris Cuen (music), Maggie Miller (poetry), Sierra Kruse (music), Chloe Jensen (poetry), Danielle Levsky (comedy/clowning), Tera Flores (music), Samie Jo Johnson (poetry), Caryl Davidson (music), and Jess Martin (dance), plus readings of short plays by Allison Fradkin and Audrey Lang. Performance Dates, Times, & Location Thursday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m. & Friday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. (Central Time) Viewers can access the performance for free on this Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/96453653111 About Violet Surprise Created by director Iris Sowlat and playwright/actress Allison Fradkin, Violet Surprise is a new queer feminist theatre company with the mission to produce new works that vibrantly and valiantly validate the identities and experiences of queer women, with fierce allyship to the non-binary community. Their first festival, "Femslash Fest," presented with Otherworld Theatre in 2019, showcased short fanfiction plays that queered the canon. Beloved fandoms ranging from "I Love Lucy" to "The Avengers" were given a Sapphic spin in this weekend of parodies. After a sold-out run and a great feature story in the Chicago Tribune, Iris and Allison knew they wanted to do more with Violet Surprise. They co-produced their second festival, "Lez Beaus," with The Martin in February. Now, Violet Surprise adapts to the Quarantine with their first digital festival. Iris Sowlat is a Chicago-based director specializing in new work with feminist and queer themes, often told through an unexpected lens. Directing credits include The Anxiety Variety Show, Joan of Arc , and Underworld Anthem (RhinoFest), The Bear (Accidental Shakespeare Co.), The Days Are Shorter (Pride Films & Plays), and many more! Iris has also worked with About Face Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Broken Nose, Collaboraction, Global Hive Laboratories, and NoPassport Theatre Alliance. She is a proud Artistic Associate at Stage Left. In 2018, Iris was named one of Windy City Times ' "30 Under 30." Allison Fradkin is a playwright with thespian tendencies. Scriptly speaking, she creates satirically scintillating stories that have been presented as staged readings and productions nationwide, most recently with Kansas City Public Theatre and Logan Squared Productions, and in the near future with Play Club West and Clutch Productions. An enthusiast of inclusivity and accessibility, she acts as Literary Manager of Violet Surprise Theatre, curating new works by queer women; and serves as Dramatist for Special Gifts Theatre, adapting scripts for actors of all abilities.
