LGBT Elder Cultural Responsiveness and Advance Directive Training 4:00pm - 6:30pm
The Center for Disability & Elder Law's Proud to Thrive program (sponsored by Pepsico, Inc.), Pride Action Tank, and the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago's Mentorship Program proudly invite you to an LGBT Elder Cultural Responsiveness and Advance Directive Training on November 20, from 4:00-6:30 PM, in Clark Hill's offices (One Prudential Plaza, 130 E Randolph St #3900, Chicago, IL 60601).
Because of lifetime experiences of discrimination, invalidation, and ongoing legal marginalization, many LGBT older adults experience disparities while aging compared to non-LGBT elders and are more likely to need legal resources to address unique needs. However, many LGBT older adults are hesitant to access services that are not culturally responsive to their identity and unique history, and often experience discrimination from disaffirming service providers.
During the first half of this training, attendees will learn the skills needed to provide culturally responsive support for LGBT elders seeking legal services.
During the second half, attendees will learn how to help LGBT complete advance directives, including Powers of Attorney for Health Care, Property, and Illinois Living Will Declarations. These advance directives are especially necessary for LGBT elders in order to protect medical and end of life wishes, especially those that pertain to gender-affirming care, and protect the ability for unmarried partners and chosen family to participate in health care and financial decisions.
A happy hour will follow, with a location to be announced.
CLE pending (2.5 hours, including 1.0 hours of Diversity & Inclusion)
Proud to Thrive is a program at CDEL that provides culturally responsive legal services for LGBT seniors and individuals living with disabilities. Proud to Thrive operates mobile, regularly scheduled legal clinics, power of attorney workshops, and educational presentations in LGBT-affirming locations across Cook County.
The Center for Disability & Elder Law is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the legal rights of low-income senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Cook County since 1984. CDEL offers assistance with several types of civil legal matters, representing hundreds of clients each year, and providing additional services to hundreds more. CDEL partners with volunteer attorneys, paralegals, and law students throughout the Chicago legal community to provide clients with access to high quality legal services they cannot otherwise afford.
